Daniel Fitzgerald is among Citizen Vinyl’s newest team members, heading up sales for our vinyl pressing plant. He’s also a life-long music fanatic and currently owns a record shop in Charlottesville, Virginia. Read on for more about Daniel!
Citizen Vinyl: What is the first vinyl album you owned?
Daniel: The first vinyl albums I remember my parents having and being completely obsessed with were Prince’s Purple Rain and Talking Heads’ Speaking in Tongues. Talking Heads taught me how to play a record on the turntable in kindergarten!
What is your background with music?
I have been a musician for 30 years, playing guitar and drums. I love playing live and being in the studio whenever that chance comes about. I have attended well over 1,000 shows and played out for years in my time in music.
You own a record store — can you tell us about it?
I owned a small record shop in the early 2000s for a few years before digital streaming services took control over music for a while. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, post-Covid, when my partner and I decided we wanted to focus on the joy of records and music and started Hello Goodbye Records in Charlottesville Virginia. We specialize in an eclectic-yet-inclusive space where we curate a selection of music from pop to punk and a lot of fun points in between.
Why are you excited to introduce artists, labels, and other clients to Citizen Vinyl?
When I first came aboard at Citizen Vinyl, I saw an organization providing food and services to a community in need in a time of crisis because they were able, and that immediately spoke to my DIY and community-based ethics. I was very proud to join the team! I am excited to introduce the world to Citizen Vinyl first and foremost because we press some amazing-sounding records. Beyond that, Citizen Vinyl has met the need for changes in the carbon footprint of the industry by being among the first plants in the U.S. to adopt Bio-Vinyl production, which is my biggest focus in this new year. I am excited to show artists and labels of all sizes that Citizen Vinyl is an organization where your music and your art matter. Each step of the way is important — from recording and mastering to production and fulfillment of your project right to your fans. At Citizen Vinyl, we are ready to help each step of the way.
What do you most love about the record industry today?
I love the endless wealth of creativity. Artists and labels pushing themselves to go bigger for their fans. I love to see record fans get super excited when they are holding that release that just looks like pure magic. I get excited when we see the projects that are coming in because we are fans of music, too. Citizen Vinyl has some groundbreaking things in the mix to really enhance the experience for our clients and we are excited to show everyone!
What are your top-three favorite albums of the moment?
My top three current albums right now are: Sol Y Sombria by Rose City Band, Stratosphere by Duster, and Madvillainy Demos by Madvillain.
We’re always excited to work with accomplished artists such as Tony Rolando, who was one of our first Cassette Duplication Service clients. Tony recently released imagine a dolphin… through Bandcamp. “What happens when you put water into your synthesizer? Perhaps with premonition, last August I… View Article
