THE CITIZEN VINYL TEAM

A COLLABORATIVE TEAM
OF THOUGHTFUL MAKERS

Citizen Vinyl is a celebration of craftsmanship, quality and art across its constituent parts:
Music. Community. Food. Design. Manufacturing. History.

Each member of our team offers their own passion and expertise to Citizen Vinyl. We share an understanding that together, we have a very exciting and unique opportunity to create something enduring, inspiring, impactful and meaningful. In doing so, our team aims to be good citizens,  and to inspire others to do the same.

GAR RAGLAND

Founder / CEO

I didn’t found Citizen Vinyl. It found me. Music nerd and studio rat. Easily inspired. Surrounded by talent. Eternally grateful to call these mountains home for me and my family.

Susannah Gebhart

Session Co-Creator

Baking is my way of exploring the world — its people, landscapes, memory-space, traditions, and history — and it is a way to learn about myself. Food and music are singular in that way. They both provide a window into an intimate expression of time, place, and culture, while also being entirely personal and transformational. To be on a team bringing both of these together in an historic building, that, itself, is a monument to keeping record, is an honor.

Eric Pieper

Brand Director

Music is my main source of inspiration in the work that I create as a graphic designer and brand builder. I’m also quite a history buff, so having the opportunity to build off the stories of this space here are Citizen Vinyl is a dream come true. As the owner of Homestead Studio, a boutique design & branding agency in Asheville, I always aim to build brands with soul that serve to enhance their community.

JOE SASFY

Advisor

I spent 35 years in the record biz in the D. C. area working as a writer, teacher and consultant. I contributed regularly to the Washington Post and Washington City Paper, and taught courses on rock history at the Smithsonian Institute in D.C. from about 1977 to 1985.  In 1985, I began working as a consultant for Time-Life Music, and over the next twenty-five years, I got to play a key role in the company’s growth into the largest direct marketer of music in the world.  I created hundreds of music collections in fields of pop, rock, soul and country music and created television ads to market Time Life music series (“don’t wait, order now!”).

Danielle Dror

Marketing Director

My favorite things in the world are people, words and music. Somehow I’ve found a job that combines all three. Will drive extensive distances for obscure middle eastern pastries.

Peter Schaper

Vice President of Operations

My background in directing organizational assessments and implementing strategic plans has led me to create successful businesses. After moving from Germany in 2007, my wife and two of my children made Asheville our new home. I enjoy hiking, biking, and riding my motorcycle in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Graham House

Session Co-Creator

A native to North Carolina, I’ve used my ability to cook as a way to travel, work, and learn in different countries with different cultures for the last fifteen years. Moving back to Appalachia has been a great opportunity to create meaningful relationships with countless local farmers. Working closely with them to push Modern Appalachian Cuisine, combining the local bounty with techniques I've learned from past experiences in Italy, Greece, South and Central America, and California.

Rob Maddox

Interior / Architectural Design

Since getting my first portable crank victrola at the age of fifteen, the hunt for and the collection of records has been an imperative. Getting a chance to combine my love of vinyl with my love of design couldn't be a better match.

Karie Reinertson

Interior / Architectural Design

When I was 10 my older sister gave me Nirvana’s first album, “Bleach” –– it was in that moment I knew I was on to something that was going to be a big part of my life. Even though I’m a visual artist, music has taken the main stage in my life –– it has quite literally become the soundtrack to my life. I’m deeply grateful to be able to connect my love of design and music in the Citizen Vinyl space.

Colby Caldwell

Program Curator

As an educator and program director of REVOLVE here in Asheville, I am committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive cultural landscape in our region. In my more private hours, I find myself pulled between looking at Carolina Panther updates and searching for obscure 80’s Goth records on Discogs. It's a toss-up.
